Range Hood Not Vented Outside? Fixes for GTA Kitchens

A recirculating hood filters some grease and pushes moisture, odours and heat back into your kitchen. Why that matters in a GTA house, and how we route real ducts in bungalows, semis and condos.

Recirculating vs Vented Hoods: Why It Matters

The difference is where the air goes. A vented (ducted) hood captures cooking exhaust and pushes it through a duct to the outdoors. A recirculating hood pulls air through a grease screen and a charcoal filter, then blows it back into the room. The filter catches some grease and some odour; it removes zero moisture and zero heat, because there is nowhere for them to go.

Builders installed recirculating hoods for one reason — they are cheap, since no duct has to be cut through the structure. That is why so many GTA kitchens have them: over-the-range microwaves set to recirculate in 1990s-2000s subdivisions, slim recirculating units in most condos.

If you cook lightly, a recirculating hood with a fresh filter is tolerable. If you cook daily — searing, frying, boiling pasta water, wok cooking — it is the weakest link in your kitchen, and no amount of cabinet or counter money fixes what it does to the air and surfaces around it.

Grease, Moisture and Air Quality: What Poor Venting Does

Grease shows up first. Aerosolized cooking oil that the filter misses settles as a tacky film on upper cabinets, the ceiling above the range, and pot rails — the yellowed haze you can feel on top of cabinets in a hard-working unvented kitchen. It shortens the life of painted finishes and makes every future repaint a degreasing job first.

Moisture is the sneakier problem in our climate. Every pot of pasta and every dishwasher cycle adds water vapour, and in a GTA winter that vapour finds cold surfaces: condensation on windows, damp drywall corners, and in poorly insulated older homes, moisture migrating into wall and attic assemblies where freeze-thaw cycling does its slow damage. A vented hood is one of the few appliances that actively removes moisture at its source.

Then there is what you breathe. Cooking — especially high-heat frying, and any gas burner — generates fine particles and combustion by-products that linger for hours in an unvented kitchen. Open-concept layouts spread it through the whole main floor. The fix is not a better filter; it is a duct.

What a Proper Vented Installation Involves in the GTA

A real venting retrofit has four parts: the hood itself, a smooth-walled metal duct sized to the hood's outlet, a short and straight route to the outdoors, and an exterior cap with a backdraft damper so winter air does not pour back in. Flexible plastic duct and long, kinked runs are the two shortcuts that quietly ruin performance.

Cost depends almost entirely on the duct route, which is why we quote it after seeing the joist direction and the nearest exterior wall rather than off a price sheet. The predictable pieces: if the hood needs a new dedicated circuit, your electrician files an ESA notification — ESA fees on typical kitchen work run about $90-$300 and are normally built into the electrical quote. Drywall or bulkhead patching after the duct goes in is a modest line at 2026 GTA drywall rates of roughly $2-$4.50 per square foot installed.

Duct Routes for Bungalows, Semis and Condos

The house type largely decides the route. The 1950s-60s bungalows across Scarborough, North York, and central Etobicoke are the easy case: the range usually sits near an exterior wall, so the duct punches straight out the back — short run, strong performance. Where the range is on an interior wall, we go up through the cabinet and across the attic or joist bay to a roof or gable cap.

Victorian and Edwardian semis in Riverdale, Leslieville, or Parkdale are trickier. Kitchens often sit against the party wall, brick does not love new penetrations, and ceiling heights invite bulkheads. The typical solution is a run concealed above the upper cabinets to the rear wall, planned together with the cabinet layout so the bulkhead reads as design rather than compromise.

Condos are their own category. Exterior penetrations are generally off the table, many buildings prohibit new ones outright, and any in-suite mechanical change needs board approval — a process that takes 4-10 weeks with drawings and insurance certificates. Some units have an existing exhaust path that a better hood can use; many are recirculating by design. High-CFM Hoods and Makeup Air

Bigger is not automatically better. The pro-style hoods that come with 36-inch ranges move serious air, and a powerful exhaust fan in a reasonably tight house can depressurize it — meaning the house starts pulling replacement air in through whatever path it finds. The dangerous path is backwards down a chimney or the flue of a gas water heater, dragging combustion gases into the living space.

That is why high-capacity hoods and makeup air have to be designed together. Depending on the hood and the house, the answer ranges from choosing a right-sized hood with good capture geometry instead of raw airflow, to a dedicated makeup air supply that opens when the hood runs. Newer, tighter houses — the post-2001 stock across Milton, Vaughan, and Markham — feel this effect more than a leaky century semi does.

Our practical guidance: match the hood to how you actually cook, favour capture area and duct quality over headline airflow numbers, and let the HVAC design be part of the kitchen plan when a big hood is on the wish list. Fixing Ventilation During Your Kitchen Renovation

The renovation is the moment to fix venting, because every obstacle is already out of the way: cabinets are off the walls, the ceiling is open or openable, the electrician is on site, and patching is already in the schedule. Retrofitting a duct into a finished kitchen means undoing finished work; doing it mid-reno means one clean pass.

It also protects the rest of your investment. A full kitchen renovation in the GTA starts at $25,000 and typically runs $25,000-$80,000 — and grease film and daily condensation are hardest on exactly the things that budget buys: sprayed finishes, painted MDF doors, stone, and lighting. When a vented hood truly is not possible — some condos, some interior-kitchen layouts — the fallback is a quality recirculating hood with real capture depth, filters replaced on schedule, and honest expectations.
